Phil Carvil

Phil leads the HealthTec Cluster in the North West of England. The two HealthTec Clusters, based in the North West and Oxfordshire, are joint regional initiatives between multiple stakeholders, led by the Science and Technology Facilities Council, part of UK Research and Innovation, and supported by the Academic Health Science Networks. The clusters connect capabilities between stakeholders to support collaborations and enable cross-sector opportunities between industrial, clinical, and academic innovators.The UKRI Science and Technology Facilities Council is one of the largest multi-disciplinary research organisations in the world, working collaboratively with UK and overseas entities. The Council has developed strategic partnerships in 3 internationally renowned UK locations (Daresbury, Edinburgh, Harwell), enabling the co-location of start-ups, SMEs, corporates, academic, and Government organisations. This unique mix offers a thriving working environment where technological advancement and business growth are supported and accelerated.

There are 15 Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs) across England, established by NHS England in 2013 to spread innovation at pace and scale – improving health and generating economic growth. Each AHSN works across a distinct geography serving a different population in each region.

A physiologist by training, Phil gained his PhD at King’s College London, which focused on evaluating a countermeasure for astronaut health for the European Space Agency. He is passionate about multidisciplinary health innovation and is the Chair of the UK Space Life and Biomedical Sciences Association and Vice President of the European Low Gravity Research Association (ELGRA). With a firm belief in promoting Diversity, Inclusion and Equality in STEM, he is also a trustee for the LGBT+ charitable trust ‘Pride in STEM’.
