FERNANDO MUZZIO

Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Rutgers University

My research interests comprise pharmaceutical formulations, manufacturing, tablet dissolution, characterization of tablet structure, powder flow, mixing, segregation, compression, liquids and suspensions, capsule filling, sustained release formulations, and tablet coating.

As director of the NSF Engineering Research Center on Structured Organic Particulate Systems, I focus on continuous manufacturing, particle engineering, and personalized medicine. We have over 50 industry members, and our main current sponsor is the FDA, which in the last five years has provided more than $8.5 million in funding for continuous manufacturing, including a recent $4M grant focusing on implementation of informatics methods for continuous manufacturing and a second $1.8 million grant on continuous bioprocessing.

I am also proud of our partnerships with Janssen and with GSK on Advanced Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, which since 2012 have provided more than $9 million in direct funding,

An important part of my professional practice is technical consulting.

I provide expert witness services through Acumen Biopharma, a company dedicated to providing expert witness and laboratory testing services for pharmaceutical IP and anti-trust litigation. My areas of expertise include formulations and manufacturing processes. In the last five years, much of my activity has focused on abuse deterrent opioid formulations.

In 2014, I founded Integra Continuous Manufacturing Systems, a company dedicated to supporting development and implementation of continuous manufacturing systems across industry.
